When she finally became responsive, the work began to teach her how to speak and eat again with the help of Speech Therapists. Her frustration was compounded by the large doses of steroids to help her brain swelling. She was emotional and starving for real food, but unable to manipulate her tongue and throat to eat it. After a lot of tries, she finally got it down. I encouraged her to speak for weeks and read books to her. I was overjoyed when I asked her a question and she finally was able to say, “uh huh.” For another week we asked yes or no questions until she could say some words again. I’ll never forget the first smile! Oh, how I missed it!!
